Corberán: “We were hurt by our lack of aggression and intensity”
Post-match press conference after the game against Real Oviedo
Valencia CF coach Carlos Corberán gave a post-match press conference following the defeat against Real Oviedo.
Analysis
We were hurt by our lack of aggression and intensity. It's impossible to win a football match when you spend 55 minutes not doing what you're supposed to do on the pitch. We were playing for three points that were essential -not because we were hovering around the relegation zone, but because we wanted those three points and we should have shown more than we did. We're very disappointed because getting these three points would have been very valuable.
The first half
I am responsible for what happens on the pitch. It’s been some time with the team not lacking the character, personality, or understanding of the game that we should have demonstrated, but that happened today.
The objective
Comfort can’t exist at Valencia CF. What we experienced today was a disastrous game. We didn't compete the way we should have. We must go for the three points in every game. There was no lack of ambition from us. We should have finished the weekend with 35 points. We weren't up to par; we didn't compete with the desire, intensity, or passion we usually show. We understand our fans' frustration because for 55 minutes we weren't up to standard. Today we're really disappointed; we played below the intensity required for the match.
High standards
I don't feel like I need to be the ‘bad cop,’ or that anyone else is that. The pressure is shared by everyone. We weren't up to the level the match required. Today it was a mistake from us; we have to avoid them. The game didn't go as it should have, from the level of intensity to the organisation. Their possession made us uncomfortable; we didn't close down the spaces. Until the 55th minute, we weren't able to find a way to change the game. We need to do better. Nobody can be happy with this performance.
Analysis of the opposition
They didn't surprise us, because they played the same way they played against RCD Espanyol. However, besides whatever Real Oviedo did, we weren't up to the level the match demanded.
